Program: Cinderella

London, 2021
Program for new musical Cinderella with book by Emerald Fennell and music/lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber. A production that rewrites the tale for a modern audience, setting the show in a town that values physical beauty above all else. The show satirizes plastic surgery and our fame and youth-obsessed culture. Prince Charming is thought to be dead and Cinderella is a childhood friend of his younger brother. Cinderella is fiercely independent and rebellious until she realizes she loves the young prince, and with the help of a plastic surgeon fairy godmother, changes her looks to appeal to him at the ball, where he unfortunately kisses another woman, until he realizes the blonde he didn't recognize was actually Cinderella. Prince Charming returns and reveals he's gay and had run away so he wouldn't have to marry a woman. It still ends with happily ever after. The storyline changes make the story much more reminiscent of The Little Mermaid and Snow White than Cinderella.
